Bling Wedding Cakes

This wedding cake had a very funny story and a very important lesson I learnt

The story started in Ramadan when a sweet girl called Aliaa came to my work shop. She gave me a picture for the cake she wanted for her wedding. This is the picture she gave me.

As always I started analyzing the cake:

  1. the cake is 5 tiers, the sizes seem like 6″, 9″, 12″, 15″ and 18″.
  2. all tiers are 6″ high except for the second one I believe it looks like 8″
  3. The cake was airbrushed unevenly in blue to give the night sky look
  4. The bottom of every tier was intensely air brushed.

The problems I had were:

  1. Silver pearls don’t stick easily to fondant because of the silver paint. They tend to jump off of the fondant once the water I used to stick them dries.
  2. The top tier has a lot of pearls they tend to push each other off.

All this means I have to take the cake to the wedding hall early so that I can stick all the pearls there. Here in Sanaa the cake gets delivered and assembled at around 3 pm. The bride and groom cut the cake at about 11 pm. If I stick the pearls at the wedding hall this means I will add atleast 4 more hours to the cake outside the fridge. This wont work.

I thought alot about the cake then I came to a final conclusion. Improvise! Silver pearls wont work. How about real crystals?? Crystals that will keep on sparkling during the wedding. I could assemble the crystals two days ahead-and leave the cake in the fridge. Transporting the cake wont be a problem since crystals dont tend to jump off of the cake when the cake is moving.

I have to make sure the cake will look better than the picture I received. I have to do everything I can to make the cake look better than the original picture. I have to trust my taste and experience and do what I know for sure will look better and suit the circumstances. I have to do all this 2 days ahead to give my self a chance and time for plan B.

So I did! I changed the cake and it looked so much better than the original cake.

Not only that, my bride sent me a message the next morning thanking me for the cake and how amazing it looked.

From all this I have an advise for all of you. Experimenting and trying new things is great. But always give your self enough time for plan B.

Have fun Learning

One other thing is that a lot of digital cameras come equipped with any zoom lens that allows more or less of the scene being included by simply ‘zooming’ in and out. These changes in the aim length usually are reflected inside the viewfinder and on massive display screen at the back of this camera.”
